The FA Cup is so rich in history, that it takes an act of outstanding merit to join the storied ranks of the competition. Particularly on a Friday night in Derby.
But cometh the odd, rearranged-for-television hour, cometh the man. And in this case, that man is Darren Bent, who secured his FA Cup legacy with one of the great own goals in FA Cup history last night.
With just eight minutes on the clock, and the ball traveling towards the goal line, Bent decided to intervene to hack it off the line. Despite the greatest of intentions, Bent contrived to slice the ball behind him, and into the back of the net. Martin Tyler's flabbergasted reaction was perfect:
In fairness to Bent, he scored at the right end after fifteen minutes later. The game ended in a 2-2 draw with a replay to come at the King Power.
Spare a thought too for Alex Pearce, Irish international and Scourge of Oman, whose insolent drag back was overshadowed by Bent's hapless O.G.
