Danny Rose's astonishing interview with The Sun this week left many bemused at such an ill-judged move by the Tottenham defender.

The England international told the paper that he was disappointed by the lack of big name signings the club has made this transfer window. He urged them to bring players into the club before the end of the summer - "and not players you have to Google and say, ‘Who’s that?’ I mean well-known players."

He also hinted at the possibility of moving away from the club and back to the north of England before the end of his career.

I am reaching my peak and have probably only got one big contract left in me.

Time is running out and I do want to win trophies. I don't want to play football for 15 years and not have one trophy or one medal.

I'm not saying I want out, but if something came to me that was concrete, I'd have no qualms about voicing my opinions to anyone at the club.

After the story blew up yesterday, Rose today apologied through his agent for his comments and said that the interview was not meant to offend his manager or team mates.

The left back underwent knee surgery at the end of last season and isn't expected to be back in contention for selection until early September, though whether or not he has smoothed things over with the Tottenham manager and Daniel Levy by then remains unclear.
