Liverpool's plan to sign a new right-back to replace Glen Johnson face a fresh challenge after Barcelona secured the contract extension of Dani Alves. While Liverpool weren't directly interested in Alves, it does mean that they will now face more competition for their top target - Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne.
According to the Liverpool Echo, Manchester United are set to renew their interest in 24-year-old Clyne after missing out on the signing of Alves.
Liverpool have already had a £10 million bid for Clyne rejected, as Southampton are holding out for a fee closer to £15 million on a player they signed for an undisclosed compensation deal from Crystal Palace just three years ago.
Southampton appear resigned to losing Clyne, and are close to signing his replacement in Portugese international Cedric Soares from Sporting Lisbon.
It looks like this is another race between English football's two historically biggest clubs for young talent this summer.
