From an irresistible livewire to a squad stalwart, Damien Duff was pretty decent in his 14 years playing for Ireland. My abiding memory of him, though, is still probably that Spain match at the '02 World Cup. That performance seemed to promise so much. It's not that Duff didn't fulfil his potential, but I think the world just caught up with him. Those mid-naughties years brought club success with Chelsea but little of substance with Ireland, and when he seemed like he'd lost his mojo and Newcastle, he reinvented himself again. I'll always remember him belting out the anthem at Lansdowne before the Aviva match, his back turned on the rest of the team. He was proud to wear the green jersey.
