Damien Duff will join Melbourne City following his departure from Fulham. The 35-year-old will take a break with his family during the World Cup before joining up with his new club for the second part of the Australian season.
The club will change its name to Melbourne City from Melbourne Heart, after being bought up by the same Abu Dhabi-based owners as Manchester City.
A while back, we reported that the winger has planned to finish his playing career in either the League of Ireland or Australia, but it seems the attractive climate and decent wages have won out for now at least.
Duff expressed his sadness at leaving the Cottagers, but said it was the right time to move on:
“It was time for everyone, for me and the club to part ways," he said.
“It’s sad but that’s the way it is. I’ve matured as a person and a player at Fulham.
“Since I've been here I've got married, had two kids, so it has been a special time in my life and I stand by what I've said before, that my most enjoyable time in football has been at Fulham.”
