Damien Duff hasn't given up on his dream of playing in the greatest league in the world - the league of Ireland sponsored by Airtricity. Duff has long spoken about playing domestically in Ireland, and it's definitely something on his bucket list.
Speaking to the Irish Times at the launch of an initiative between First Ireland and the Beacon Clinic, Duff said that his rehab is going well and he thinks he's about two months away from being fit enough to play. He retains hope that he will be able to play before the end of the season, but looks likely to start the 2016 Airtriticity League season anyway.
Duff has previously said he'll be joining a League Of Ireland club within two months, but given that was three months ago there must be some concerns over his ankle. Duff has no such worries, and gave a positive update on his rehab:
It was straightforward surgery; I just have to let it heal. Tendons are a bit slower. I’m in the final stages of rehab. Hopefully, I can play in a couple of months. I hope I can get a game this season. But I want to be right; I don’t want to come back and play like a muppet.
When talking about playing next season, he dismisses the notion that he'll be too old despite being 37 by the time the season starts referring to his form in the Australian A-League before he got injured:
I was flying in Oz before I got injured and if I’m fit and well, that’s what I want to do.
Duff has yet to commit to a club, but says that the opportunity to coach is a bigger factor than his wages amidst talk of several clubs being interested. It'll be interesting to see where the Duffer ends up.
