Damien Delaney was involved in an altercation with a fan during Crystal Palace's game with Sunderland at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon.
Palace were 4-0 down at the time and the atmosphere in the stadium was beginning to feel hostile. As Delaney made his way to the tunnel following the half-time whistle, he was confronted by a Palace supporter.
According to BBC's Jacqui Oatley, speaking on the broadcaster's Final Score show, the fan attempted to punch the 35-year-old.
My colleage next to me actually saw it happen towards the end of the first half. As the players were going off at half-time, a fan jumped the hoardings and tried to punch Damien Delaney.
He was restrained by officials and managed to be kept away.
The fan was arrested by police.
Delaney did not return to the pitch for the second half. He was replaced by Andros Townsend.
Some images of the episode have since emerged.
