Daily Mail Writer Delivers Laughable Defence Of Jose Mourinho Amid Carneiro Row

Is Jose Mourinho a sexist? We don't know. The recent incident with Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro is certainly not proof of that. Is Jose Mourinho an arrogant bully? Well that's an awful lot easier to answer.

The fact that Carneiro is one of the most high profile women in the Premier League should be merely a footnote to his ugly incident but in recent days it has become front and centre in the UK press. Op-eds have been written about this being proof of football's inherent sexism and that may well be true but it's just as possible that this is simply Jose Mourinho throwing his weight around and being a horrible human being.

Surely if he wanted Carneiro out of her job because of her gender, he would have made that happen last season when hardly anyone would have noticed. Instead, it's become the biggest issue in football at the start of the new season and even Chelsea fans are unhappy with Mourinho's antics.

However, now something interesting has happened. Mourinho's defenders are actually using the sexism suggestions to point out what an impressive alpha male the Chelsea manager is.

Jeff Powell, writing in the Daily Mail has penned one hell of a column today, which is wonderfully summed up the intro to his article.

Just in case that's a bit ambiguous. Powell is saying that Jose Mourinho is not a sexist because (a) he loves his wife and (b) he loves his daughter as much as he loves his son. Let that sink in for a second.

In addressing the second point, we'd suggest that that may well be true but the kind of support he will be receive will be from the kind of backward individuals who would write sentences like this:

The sisterhood are railing against Jose Mourinho for castigating Chelsea’s lady medic.

That's Powell's first sentence of his column and it just goes down hill from there. Didi Hamann did a good job of summing up what everyone thinks of Powell's assertions. Unfortunately Didi, no, it's not a piss take.
