In one of the most pointless and ridiculous pieces of journalism that you will see this year The Daily Mail football writer Martin Samuel has suggested that Marseille's on loan midfielder Joey Barton should come out as being gay.

Samuel suggests that Barton coming out as gay would be the ultimate move in his quest to be respected intellectually and he could also be the 'gay hero' that Anders Lindegaard suggested that football needed.

So here’s a thought. Joey Barton continues his quest for intellectual and social respectability. Why not come out as gay? Instant credibility, instant respect, untouchable by the Football Association or future employers. His past misdeeds mentally reprocessed and explained.

He also speculates that a change in Barton's sexual preference would provide a new endless well of material for his Twitter account as he would now be able to quote Alexander The Great, Leonardo Da Vinci and Oscar Wilde.

Not done there he took a swipe at Barton's 'Franglais' accent calculating that it already had him 50% of the way if he did want to become gay.
