The Croatian Football Federation has issued an apology after a swastika appeared on the pitch during their game against Italy in Split last night.
The symbol could be seen mown into the grass on the pitch which was played at an empty Stadion Poljut. The match was a behind closed doors qualifier after racist chants from the Croatian fans during the return game last November.

Italian officials alerted UEFA to the symbol during the first half, and the groundmen attempted to cover the symbol at halftime without success.
The Croatian Football Federation says that the perpetrators sprayed a chemical agent on the grass 24-48 hours before the game with the intention that it wouldn't be visible until the game.
The Croatian Football Federation spokesman said:
This was an obvious act of sabotage and a criminal act. We condemn it and ask the police and judicial bodies to find the person(s) responsible for what it a shame not only for Croatian football, but the entire country.
We express regret and condemn this act, and we apologise to all the viewers, guests and players from both teams.
