Cristiano Ronaldo has publicly responded to the allegation that he raped Kathryn Mayorga, a 34-year-old American woman, in his Las Vegas hotel room in June 2009.
Taking to his official Twitter and Facebook accounts, the Portuguese footballer vehemently denied the allegation, and stressed that he remained keen to clear his name.
Ronaldo appeared to outline that he will be taking a reserved public stance on these matters from this point onward.
"Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense.
"My clear conscious will thereby allow me to await with tranquility the results of any and all accusations."
I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me. Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in. Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense.

The Juventus player had previously labeled the allegations "fake news" in an Instagram video.
These tweets comes a day after the Las Vegas police department announced that they had re-opened a case investigating a rape that was alleged to have occurred in 2009.
"The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to a call of a sexual assault on June 13, 2009. At the time the report was taken, the victim did not provide detectives with the location of the incident or suspect description. A medical exam was conducted," said the police statement.
"As of September 2018, the case has been reopened and our detectives are following up on information being provided by the victim. This is an on-going investigation and no further details will be released at this time."
A civil lawsuit was filed in Nevada late last month in Mayorga's name seeking compensation for injuries she allegedly suffered. It also seeks to invalidate a 2010 agreement that saw Mayorga awarded $375,000 as an out of court settlement.
