Cristiano Ronaldo's performance against Slovenia has overshadowed Portugal's win in the Euro 2024 Round of 16. Last night, Portugal needed penalties to secure their progression to the quarter-final of Euro 2024 following a goalless draw with Slovenia in Frankfurt.
But it wasn't the nature of the Portuguese win that caught all the headlines.
After a penalty miss in the first half of extra-time, Cristiano Ronaldo broke down in floods of tears at the half-time break, seemingly unable to control his emotions as his team-mates tried to rally around him.
Former Manchester United teammate Diogo Dalot was among those to offer his support. Ronaldo's mum also let the emotions get the better of her as she was also spotted crying in the stands.
The emotional outburst by Ronaldo was discussed by the RTÉ panel but particularly didn't impress former German international Didi Hamann,
"This is the most embarrassing, the most ridiculous decision I have ever seen…I’ve not seen it of anyone.
He’s a role model, there are a lot of kids who want to be like him and failing is part of the game.
I just found it utterly embarrassing what he did. He could have cried after the game."

Cristiano Ronaldo's redemption
Credit to Ronaldo though, he showed impressive strength in composing himself to take and score his penalty in the shootout.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star is going through a spell without hitting the back of the net and it is now eight appearances at a major tournament without a goal.
But it was his team-mate that took the limelight last night, goalkeeper Diogo Costa made three brilliant saves in the shootout to save Ronaldo's blushes and confirm his countries progression to the next round.
They have now set up a heavyweight quarter-final clash with France in Hamburg on Friday night, a repeat of the 2016 final.
