There's no doubt about it, referees are really starting to clamp down on diving. Yes, there's plenty more to be done but the number of players being booked for diving has notably increased in the past year. However, referees do a difficult job so it's impossible to get it right all the time.
Usually that means you'll still see some penalties given where they shouldn't be but during Real Madrid's 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano last night the referee went the other way in a rather high profile manner. Cristiano Ronaldo has gone quite some way to shaking off his play-acting reputation but perhaps not far enough given that the referee chose to give him a yellow card for this blatant penalty shortly into the second half.
The booking now means he will miss Madrid's next game at home to Eibar on Saturday.
