As we all know, in every league in every country the big teams get the decisions. And in a league where draws are as rare and as crushing as defeats for the big two teams, nobody wants to see one of those teams fall four points behind this early in the season.
So when Real Madrid were heading for a draw at newly promoted Elche, it came as no surprise to conspiracy theorists when Real were awarded a last minute penalty (which Cristiano Ronaldo scored) after Pepe dragged his marker down on top of him from a corner in the fourth minute of three added on (Elche had scored in injury time).

Elche players were also handed eight yellow cards in the game to Real's two. While it is quite normal for the underdog to commit more fouls, it fuelled the conspiracy theory and led to a barrage of fans alerting the police, who tweeted:
"We have received more than 120 mentions about football in the last 10 minutes...Remember, we try to help you about SAFETY... :-)"
Hemos recibido >120 menciones sobre fútbol en los últimos diez minutos... Recordad, tratamos de ayudaros sobre SEGURIDAD... :-)

Gerard Piqué gave his thoughts on the incident:
"Watching a comedy film on Canal+ Liga...they’re always good at this time of night!"

Álvaro Arbeloa responded with a thinly veiled reference to Barcelona's diving:
"Happy with the 3 points! I’m delighted some people have changed the theatre for the cinema!"
