Glen Johnson could be about to sign a new deal while Raheem Sterling has apparently turned down another contract offer. Now isn't that the kind of news Liverpool fans were just dying to hear today.
The Mirror are reporting that Sterling has turned down the club's second concrete offer, after their last offer of £70,000 was rebuffed a couple of months ago. At the time it was said that Sterling was holding out for an offer around the £100,000 mark and it seems Liverpool's latest offer hasn't satisfied those wishes.
Yet perhaps even more upsetting for some is the Daily Mail's assertion that Brendan Rodgers is going ahead with plans to offer Johnson a new three year deal to try and keep him away from the likes of Roma, AC Milan and Inter.
Earlier in the week, the Liverpool manager confirmed that he intended to keep some of his more experienced players, leading many to assume that Johnson could be one set to be kept on.
The intention will be to keep everyone – we can't have three or four leaving next season. Steven will obviously be a loss. When you are losing someone of that calibre of man and player it would be a loss to any club.
For the younger players to develop their potential they are going to need that seniority around them. You can't just have a whole group of young players.
Glen is not the marauding full-back of six or seven years ago but he is still a quality player and he has a lot to offer with his experience. His game will adapt over the next couple of years and we want to keep him.
It had been speculated that Liverpool were willing to offer the 30 year old a new deal if he agreed to take a 50% pay cut to around the £60-70,000 mark. However, if the latest reports are to be believed, he's willing to settle for a new three year deal worth closer to £100,000 per week and Liverpool are ready to give it to him.
So that's a no to Sterling's demands for £100,000 a week but yes to Johnson's?
We're calling bullshit on the figures at least. For all the drawbacks of offering a 20 year old that much money, Liverpool couldn't really be offering the same kind of deal to a 30 year old right back who has been average at beat and a liability at worst, could they?
