Along with quite a few other positions, Liverpool are in dire need of a right back. Glen Johnson is on the way out (finally), while Javi Manquillo failed to impress following his loan spell from Atletico Madrid.
Now it looks like Liverpool have identified their ideal target and they haven't wasted anytime in going after him. An official offer of £10 million was lodged for Nathaniel Clyne last night, however, it seems it was quickly rejected by Southampton.
Clyne has been widely linked with Man United for as long as it was abundantly clear that Louis Van Gaal was in need of defensive reinforcements. Only last month it was reported that the 24 year old had made it clear he would like to join his former Southampton teammate, Luke Shaw, at Old Trafford. However, Liverpool making an official offer this early could make things interesting.
The England international only has a season left on his contract, hence, Liverpool's rather reasonable opening offer. However, if Van Gaal has identified Clyne as his first choice right back, you'd have to think he could end up leaving Southampton for significantly more than £10 million.
