Scottish football has been embroiled in debate since the sacking of Gordon Strachan following failure to make the playoffs for the 2018 World Cup.

While most of the players were behind Strachan, and some such as Scott Brown have taken to social media to voice their displeasure with his departure, it was clear that many fans wanted him gone.

On BT Sport's Scottish Football Extra before St.Johnstone took on Rangers, we learned that Chris Sutton falls into the latter category of believing that Strachan had to go, and he pulled no punches in his damning review of Strachan's final campaign.

Sutton insisted that Strachan must be held accountable for failing to reach the playoffs due to his team selections, and his reluctance to play Celtic players -opting instead for players playing in England - in particular.

Really what Gordon said after the [Slovenia] game, to have 'no regrets', well, come on Gordon, you picked the wrong team against Lithuania.

This was 10 days after Celtic played against Manchester City in the Champions League, their players were on top form, he got it wrong in Slovakia, and then all the genetics stuff.

He should have been sectioned for that.

Ally [McCoist] is not the biggest, Kenny Dalglish, Jinky Johnstone, I mean it was just utterly ridiculous. And how many times have we seen Gordon actually watch games in Scotland? He went with the English based players, he got it wrong and he has to accept responsibility for that. He had to go.

When he started to put [Celtic players] into the side, they started to get results, so to come out and say he has no regrets is just stubborn, pig-headed, rubbish.

Like him or not, Sutton is a breath of fresh air in punditry for the manner in which he simply refuses to care what other people think about his strong opinions.

Too many are reluctant to say what they actually think and thus sit on the fence, but Sutton picks his side and will argue it until the cows come home. While his points regarding Strachan were passionately made, they do have substance to them and in this case his view reflects that of many of the Tartan Army.

Malky Mackay has been appointed interim manager, but the search for Strachan's replacement goes on.
