Chris Sutton couldn’t resist a dig at Rangers when analysing Celtic’s Champions League campaign.
In what was a hugely disappointing Champions League campaign for both Celtic and Rangers, both sides finished bottom of their respective groups, with zero wins and a combined two points.
While they would have both have hoped for progress into the knockout stages, both sides had extremely difficult groups. Celtic’s group included reigning champions Real Madrid, RB Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk, while Rangers faced Liverpool, Napoli and Ajax.
Despite both teams finishing bottom of their group, it has been a story of two very different campaigns.

For Celtic, some hugely positive performances were not turned into results, with the Scottish champions producing costly errors that were punished at crucial moments.
For Rangers however, it was a much more disappointing campaign, as they broke an unwanted record for the worst Champions League campaign in the history of the competition, conceding 22 goals as they suffered heavy defeats through the group stages.
Despite Celtic’s European campaign ending before Christmas, Chris Sutton found room for optimism in Celtic’s campaign, while he also couldn’t resist a cheeky dig at Rangers.
"Celtic fans can see progress"
"Celtic have shown they can compete at this level"@chris_sutton73 analyses Celtic's Champions League Campaign...💬 pic.twitter.com/0oNpa3FHfT— Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) November 4, 2022
“I think that Celtic fans can see progress, and that’s the most important thing. I think performances have been there.
They have missed chances. The Juranovic penalty miss summed up Celtic in the Champions League this season. If Celtic had taken their chances, they would have finished with a lot more points, but you have to be ruthless at this level and Celtic haven’t done that and that’s been their issue.
But in terms of can they compete at this level, I think they have shown that they can. Where looking across the city, they are in a real mess Rangers, they haven’t competed at all, they’ve been weak.”
