Shane Duffy saw red, literally and figuratively, after 28 minutes at the Amex Stadium on Tuesday night. The Ireland centre-back was sent-off for thrusting his head at Crystal Palace's Patrick van Aanholt directly in front of referee, Kevin Friend.

Despite the loss of Duffy, Brighton still went on to win the game 3-1. They had already been one up through a Glenn Murray penalty just minutes before Duffy's moment of madness. Leon Balogun added a second for the home side and Florin Andone a third in first half injury time. A Luka Milivojevic penalty just under 10 minutes from the end was Palace's consolation.

"There is no hiding place for what Shane Duffy did," Brighton manager, Chris Hughton, said after the game.

He knows better than that because he is an experienced international player.

No one will know more than him that he can't get away with that.

Unfortunately we will miss him for three games now due to suspension and that is a shame at this busy time of the season, but it is an opportunity for someone else.

Duffy also apologised for being sent-off.
