Chris Forrester is having a very different summer to last year. Just 10 months after joining Peterborough in August 2015, Forrester was handed a new three-year contract at the club after enjoying a superb debut season. That was shortly followed by him being made club captain aged just 23.
Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph this week, manager Grant McCann revealed that the Dubliner has been relieved of his duties as captain.
McCann believes that the captaincy overwhelmed Forrester post-Christmas. Jack Baldwin, who recently signed a new two-year deal at the club, has taken over from the Irish midfielder.
I spoke to Chris (Forrester) and I just want him to concentrate on his game. I think the captaincy probably got on top of him from Christmas onwards and he would probably agree with that.
Back in February Forrester was sent off for protesting with an assistant referee as Peterborough lost 2-0 to Walsall. McCann said after the game that he was angry with Forrester due to his lack of discipline.
The 24-year-old was also linked with moves to a number of clubs higher up the English football ladder during the January window.
McCann added this week that he believes the new responsibility will help Baldwin as a player.
I believe Jack has all the attributes to be a really good captain of this club. He is a leader. He is determined and he has a big will to win.
I am obviously delighted Jack signed his new contract. He is integral to the way I want to play and what we want to do next year.
I think he is over the worst of his injuries and you saw in the games he played when he was fully fit that he is a very good player and how much better our results were.
I believe he will become an even better player with the added responsibility of the captaincy.
