'In terms of worst days, it's got to be one of the worst in my managerial career,' Peterborough manager Grant McCann told reporters on Saturday evening following his side's 2-0 defeat away to Walsall.
McCann had witnessed his centre-half and goalkeeper fighting in the first half. Shortly after Walsall took the lead late in the game, captain Chris Forrester was sent-off for shouting at the assistant referee as he protested for a foul on Peterborough goalkeeper Luke McGee. McCann called his players' behaviour 'embarrassing, not good enough for this football club'.
He was especially angry with Forrester as he felt there was still sufficient time to find an equaliser when the Dubliner was sent off.
I'm angry with the discipline of my captain today. That's what I'm angry about. The fact that he got sent off for shouting at a linesman. It's not what we're used to at our club. There's seven or eight minutes left, there's still a chance to get back into the game. That's the thing.
McCann added that Forrester's conduct will be dealt with 'in-house' and that the matter may be 'taken out of his hands'.
We did, 100 per cent [deserve that defeat]. Why? Because we lacked discipline. Players want to fight with each other.
Andy Grant gets a yellow card. We throw a ball in from the corner, the goalkeeper throws one in. Then the captain wants to shout at the linesman. I don't know what he said to him but that will be dealt with in-house. The discipline was no where near [good enough] today. That's the first time I've had to say that this season. I'm really, really frustrated.
Asked about Walsall's first goal, McCann had very little sympathy for his keeper.
Luke's been very good for us this year. I've watched it back and it's minimal. The contact's minimal. He's got to do better with that. If you feel a bit of pressure, you've got to punch it. It's a mistake. I've got no complaints about it.
