Chelsea's Technical Director Michael Emenalo appeared on the club's official television channel to explain the decision to sack Jose Mourinho this afternoon. Emenalo revealed that results were the main reason behind the decision, but also drew attention to a "palpable discord between players and manager".

Emenalo came across as a kind of Public Relations genius, managing to give satisfying answers to questions without at any stage mentioning anybody by name. This included a nebulous tribute to Mourinho:

Whilst there remains huge sentiment towards the individual who has done so much for the club, the fact of the matter is that Chelsea Football club is in trouble.

It is a nice summary of Mourinho's decline and fall at Chelsea: From The Special One to The Happy One to The Individual.

Emenalo also said that Chelsea are like any big club, and  have a contigency plan in place regarding the Sunderland game this weekend. Such is the frequency of sackings at Stamford Bridge, you feel life at Chelsea is just one long contingency plan.
