When La Liga announced that they planned to start hosting Primeira Liga games in the US, the footballing world let out a collective groan. The decision which heralded the increased globalisation of football as a product did feel like it had been gestating for a while, and it appears that it may be applied to even more leagues and competitions, including the Champions League.
Jaume Roures, founder and owner of media giant Mediapro, appeared on Catalunya Radio station "El Matí", and revealed that initial talks have begun looking into the feasibility of bringing the Champions League to the US:
Talks are ongoing investigating the feasibility of hosting a future Champions League final in New York City.
Roures went onto argue that the benefit of staging games in America, citing the financial windfall and PR aspects Girona FC will get from their La Liga tie with Barcelona at the end of January in Miami:
Despite there being a financial benefit for Girona FC, the club will also be subject to massive exposure and being the centre of the world.
Though only moving the Champions League final to the US would represent a less intrusive experiment that La Liga are trialling at the moment, it is still troubling that these glamour ties on the other side of the world has feels more and more inevitable.
