On Sunday, at Glasnevin Cemetary, a ceremony will take place for National Famine Memorial Day. It is the ninth year in which there has been an observance for the Great Famine - an event which shaped Irish history.
Today, Celtic play Rangers - their first meeting in the League for four years.
The Celtic jersey will carry a crest acknowledging National Famine Memorial Day.
CEO Peter Lawwell told the club's website that Celtic's history is 'inextricably linked to the Great Famine'.
The origins of Celtic Football Club will forever be inextricably linked to the Great Famine and it is hugely important that we once again join in this annual commemoration.
Celtic was formed by immigrants as a vehicle to support people in real need, many whose families had escaped the devastation of the Great Famine. We are delighted that the Club’s social dimension and charitable ethos, borne from these events, remain so true to our origins.
We should never forget the devastating and lasting effect which the Famine had on the lives of so many millions of people and we are pleased again to play our part in this year’s memorial.
