Netflix have released a trailer for their upcoming documentary The Final: Attack on Wembley, which outlines the carnage surrounding the the Euro 2020 final at the venue.

On July 11th 2021, England and Italy faced off in the final match of a tournament that had been pushed back by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

As England made their way through the competition, the public's excitement built and it all culminated on that fateful Sunday in London, when people took to the streets early to start drinking and indulge in other recreational activities.

The new Netflix trailer depicts the carnage that took place on that day, as well as what happened ahead of kick-off, when thousands of ticketless supporters made their way to Wembley in the hope of witnessing the England men's team winning their first trophy since their 1966 World Cup triumph.

In the clip, it is explained that there was a limited police presence outside Wembley, which remains baffling given the size of the occasion, and this contributed to a number of fans storming through the gates at the stadium.

We hear from innocent supporters from both competing nations who were caught up in the chaos, as well as Wembley workers who were tasked with managing an unenviable situation.

There is one talking head, presumably an England supporter, who says he "wouldn't change anything about that day," suggesting a sense of pride at how so-called football fans carried on over the course of the afternoon and evening.

At the time, the dramatic scenes made headlines around the world, bringing shame upon a nation that were supposed to be celebrating "football coming home".

Instead, Italy lifted the trophy after winning on penalties, and the English authorities were left once again to clean up a reputation damaged by people who claim to be interested in watching football.

The Final: Attack on Wembley will be available on Netflix from May 8th and is bound to be an interesting watch.
