It was billed as a game that would either open up the race for top spot in the Championship, or seal it for high-flying Wolverhampton Wanderers.
After a turgid first-half of football, neither Cardiff nor Wolves looked overly keen to rock the boat; both would solidify their promotion credentials with a draw in Wales tonight.
Yet, as the second-half opened up, the star of Wolves promotion bid had his say on proceedings; Ruben Neves opening the scoring with a wonderful free-kick.
This proved to be the necessary catalyst for a chaotic final few minutes of Championship football.
With Cardiff doing all they could to restore parity, they were afforded a chance when substitute Anthony Pilkington was brought down in the box during injury-time for a Cardiff City penalty.
Up stepped Gary Madine, but, more crucially, so too did John Ruddy - the score remained 1-0.
With five minutes added on and the penalty coming in the 94th minute, that should have been it. Yet, Cardiff were not finished yet. When Aron Gunnarsson was brought down inside/on the line of the Wolves box, Neil Warnock's side were afforded another chance.
Up step Junior Hoilett; the crossbar would be his undoing. You can watch that madness play out below.
Even then, the drama was not over even if the game was.
When Wolves' Nuno Espirito Santo went to shake hands with Warnock on the pitch, he was told in no uncertain terms what to do.
He got the message pretty quickly.
Although second-placed Cardiff do have a game in-hand on Wolves, Santo's side now sit 9 points clear with only 5 games remaining of their own.
