Caoimhín Kelleher Might Get What He Wished For As Arne Slot Provides Alisson Update

At the beginning of the season Caoimhín Kelleher was very open and candid about his current situation at Liverpool, making no apologies for wanting to leave and get first team football.

Becoming a regular starter for a Premier League club is the ambition for the Irish goalkeeper, and although he has enjoyed incredible success at Liverpool, he is no longer satisfied with the number two position.

With Alisson solidified as the club's number one, and arguably one of the best goalkeepers in the world, it was always going to be difficult for Kelleher to play regular football.

However, the Brazilian shot stopper does seem to pick up injuries more often than most keepers do, and time and time again the Cork native has had to step up to the plate.

It's his great performances in these games that make Liverpool so reluctant to sell the young goalie, and he was in top form again at the weekend as he started in place of the injured Alisson against Bournemouth, keeping a clean sheet in the process.

Tonight Liverpool play West Ham in the Carabao Cup, a competition that the team won last season with Kelleher in nets for the whole tournament, and it looks like they will be calling on him again.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Arne Slot has revealed that Alisson won't be back in time for the cup match, and could miss the weekend's Premier League tie against Wolves as well.

Caoimhín will be in goal tomorrow", confirmed Slot.

"That's the one thing I know for sure at this moment. Alisson is getting there, but I think this game is coming just a bit too early.

"We’re looking at the weekend against Wolves, but it’s going to be tight, so let’s see if he manages to be there."

Kelleher probably didn't expect to see so much action so early in the season, but we doubt that he will be complaining.

If the Ireland international can put in big performances like he has done in the past, it will only make him more sought after by other clubs who are on the hunt for a new number one.

Slot admitted that he was impressed with what he saw from Kelleher against Bournemouth, which was the player's first game under the new manager.

We needed our goalkeeper today more than in all the other matches we played before," said the Dutchman.

"Because, Bournemouth got more chances than I am used to seeing the other teams getting against us in the first six games of the season.

"But it was a good thing that we had Caoimhín today because he made some really good saves – which Alisson did in the other games as well, but he didn't have to make that many as Caoimhín made today."

No matter how well Kelleher does however, it is understood by all parties that Alisson will be back in the starting line up when he his fit again.

However, Carabao Cup games has always been given to the Irishman, and with two winners medals already locked away in his trophy cabinet, he will be hoping to make it three before his likely departure in the summer.
