Caoimhin Kelleher is set to start tonight against Southamption in the League Cup, but it could be one of his last appearances in a Liverpool shirt.

The Cork native has been filling in as the club's number one for the past two months as Alisson was out injured, but now that the Brazilian has returned, Kelleher is relegated to the bench again.

Liverpool's Irishman was brilliant during his time between the sticks, and manager Arne Slot has heaped lots of his praise in his direction.

However, in a press conference before tonight's cup tie, the Dutchman has admitted that he hopes Kelleher won't be needed as much in the second half of the season.

“I agree with you that it's one of the most difficult jobs in football if the first goalkeeper is always available, because then you work for the whole season and you hardly ever have the chance to play because you normally don't come in 10 minutes or 15 minutes before the end (of games).

“He, unfortunately for us but good for him, has already made quite a lot of minutes, so I think if you make a list of players with the amount of minutes there will be players that have far less playing time than him.

“So, I think he can look back at the first half of the season for himself as a positive first half of the season.

“We as a club, of course, hope that all players are available in the second half of the season so he will not make the amount of minutes that he did in the first half.

“But we are really fortunate to have such a great second goalkeeper, that if we need him he is able to do as well as he did.”

After keeping back to back clean sheets against Real Madrid and Man City, many fans thought that Kelleher could be in a position to actually compete for the number one spot.

However, it appears that Slot still sees Alisson as his main goalkeeper, and the only way that will change is if he picks up another injury.
