The Qatar Museum Authority bought the statue of the infamous Zinedine Zidane headbutt on Marco Materazzi for an undisclosed amount last month and has situated it near a restaurant in Doha. The statue was initially on display in Paris before being bought because as the director of the Qatar Museum Authority explained to Doha News:
"Yes, we expect a lot of people to want to take photos with it, and of it.
It’s an impressive piece. It’s a huge sculpture, and it’s done in the same style as Greek Mythological statues, but this glorifies human defects instead. It shows that although we sometimes treat footballers like gods, they’re not - they’re just human beings.”
Well, today's Doha news reports that locals are demanding the removal of statue as they consider it offensive to Islam, a snippet of some of the twitter reaction highlights the local concerns with comments such as:
“Who is this Zidane to be honored by such a statue?! And what did he do for Qatar?! Should anyone who deserves to be honored receive that honor at the expense of our religion and beliefs?!”)
There has been no comment yet as to whether or not the statue will be moved.
We cannot confirm reports that moving the statue to winter is under consideration.
