One former player who will not be the most popular man at Anfield this week is former goalkeeper and general madman Bruce Grobbelaar.
The outspoken goalie has publicly declared his displeasure with current Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet before, in fact, so much so that he was actually asked by the club to tone it down, but it seems as though he is ignoring those wishes as while speaking to Talksport earlier in the week Grobbelaar again took a shot at the Belgian.
After clarifying that he was asked not to criticise Mignolet, Grobbelaar then proceeded to suggest that a young Canadian player who he is currently coaching is a better all-round keeper:
I’ve had my criticism of him for two or three years, I even got pulled in and asked not to criticise him so openly.
I’ve said that he is a goalkeeper who is a great shotstopper, but he is not the overall package. The overall package is good with your feet and coming out and commanding your area.
I’ve got a goalkeeper in Canada, a 24-year-old, who does this better than Mignolet does and is just as good of a shotstopper. He is more of a package than Mignolet is.
And then, in what can only be seen as an effort to further piss off those at Anfield, Grobbelaar revealed that Klopp has his eye on a number of keepers in Germany and that he expects Mignolet to be replaced sooner rather than later:
I think he is looking at it [buying a replacement for Mignolet]. There are a couple of goalkeepers in the German league that he is looking at so I can see that might be one of his first signings.
He just can't help himself.
You would have to imagine that the goalkeeping position is one that Klopp will consider as he begins to build his own Liverpool squad, but it's crazy to see a former player go against the club's wishes in this fashion.
Bruce Grobbelaar plays by his own rules, sometimes against his better judgement.
