The EU Are Pushing For The World Cup To Be Taken Away From Russia

It's not often that meetings of European leaders lead to a change in the football landscape, but that's what could happen if David Cameron gets his way. The British Prime Minister, along with high ranking diplomats, are gathering support within the EU to force FIFA to strip Russia of the right to host the tournament in 2018.

While the political elite have little direct power over football's governing body, it is hoped that the EU can sway FIFA into altering their plans in an attempt to effectively sanction Russia over the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

According to one European diplomat the idea is being taken very seriously in the corridors of power within Brussels.

The idea of taking the World Cup away from Russia has come up in talks between European leaders. Britain especially has pushed it as a way of taking broader and more imaginative measures against Russia.

Another EU official has said that such a measure is needed to force home the issue to Vladimir Putin and those around him.

The existing sanctions have not yet changed Russian behaviour and we need to be more imaginative. We need to have tougher sanctions with new economic measures as well as looking at new options, for example, not holding the World Cup in Russia, dismissing Putin from the G20 or ASEM meetings between Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

For his part, Russian President Putin said on Friday that he is not concerned about such a threat.

Fifa has already said soccer and sport are outside politics and I think that is the right approach.
