Brian Kerr Says What We're All Thinking Regarding The Bray Wanderers Fiasco

They say any press is good press, so by that logic the board of Bray Wanderers will be absolutely delighted that their series of wild statements made news headlines all over the world in what has been a particularly turbulent time for a club that only seems to know turbulence.

Building a new stadium and creating an academy to compete with the very best clubs in Europe seems like a bonkers request for a club that saw less than 600 people attend their game with Finn Harps on Friday, but what was said was said, and Bray Wanderers raised many an eyebrow in the process.

Speaking to Independent.ie at Irishtown Stadium on Saturday, Kerr suggested that the statements that Bray Wanderers have released will do little other than embarrass their hard-core supporters, before questioning why the owners got involved at all and suggesting that the FAI could have done more at an earlier stage to prevent this from happening.

While I admire anyone who is prepared to put their money behind teams in the League of Ireland, I wonder why these people got involved in the first place because you rarely get much back from it other than seeing the team you are supporting winning.

I don't think they should have been surprised that their gates didn't increase to 10,000 which seems to be along the lines of what they were expecting just because they invested in the team.

I think it has been a messy week, very difficult for the players who are depending on the payment of those contracts for their living and I think the FAI need to do a lot more about it, they needed to intervene a lot earlier, they need to get the situation sorted a lot quicker so there is clarity for the players and supporters about the future of Bray Wanderers.

Once again, Kerr speaking sense when that seems scarce elsewhere.

To suggest that Bray's situation was unforeseeable is just wrong as so many people saw it coming, but that was the line from the FAI's director of competitions Fran Gavin last week. Kerr doesn't accept that nothing could have been done, and he's right to do so.
