As eir Sport commentator Des Curran mentioned that the Europa League trophy was the one missing from the Man Utd trophy cabinet during Thursday's semi-final first leg of the competition, Brian Kerr interjected.
He had a story to tell - one about his own experience with UEFA trophies.
Though Kerr did not specify which trophy he was talking about, it's likely it was either the U16 or U18 European Championship trophy, both of which he won with Ireland in 1998, to which he was referring.
It sounded like a memory long forgotten which had just resurfaced as Kerr reminisced about having removed the trophy from his car boot one day only to discover that a part was missing.
I had one of those trophies from UEFA one time in the boot of my car for about six months. It was rattling about in the car.
I went to get it out one day and there was an arm missing off it. There was terrible panic in the FAI.
Asked by Curran if he had got in trouble over the matter, Kerr said 'eternal damnation' was luckily avoided.
With plans already in place to have a silversmith manufacture a new part, the missing piece was recovered at a school.
I nearly did. We were on the road to get the new bit... a new bit done by a silversmith to stick onto the side of it but it was discovered in a school after a few months and rescued us from eternal damnation.
