Brendan Rodgers Seems To Have Changed His Tune On Memphis Depay

A couple of weeks ago Brendan Rodgers was asked about the possibility of Liverpool pipping Man United to the signing of Memphis Depay. By not denying that there was interest from Anfield, Rodgers as good as poured petrol over the flames of the rumour.

I can’t confirm either way - you know me, in terms of speculation of players. The kid is a very talented player, of course. But I wouldn’t like to confirm either way.

Granted that's not a 'we're doing our best to sign him' but in the world of Premier League tidbits, it was as good as 'we're interested'. At least that's what many Liverpool fans took it as. The last time they signed the Eredivisie's top scorer things worked out quite well. Maybe it would happen again.

It didn't, Man United swooped. Depay was only too happy to work under Louis Van Gaal again and Liverpool fans were chalking this one up to another failure for the beloved transfer committee.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool's clash with Chelsea on Sunday, Rodgers was of course asked about the first big move of the transfer window and he was rather more definitive this time.

He may or may not be telling the truth here but one way or another, it will do little to assuage fans fears that another summer of transfer near misses is on the cards.
