The football editor of The Times has made the claim that Brendan Rodgers did not originally want to sign Kop hotshot Daniel Sturridge, instead had his sights set on Clint Dempsey.
Speaking on a Liverpool FC special on Youtube, Tony Evans suggested that Reds' owner John Henry wanted additional strikers before Rodgers could offload Andy Carroll.
He went on to say that a deal to bring Sturridge to Anfield was all but signed when Carroll was shipped out to West Ham, but Rodgers pulled the plug on the move at the last minute because he "didn't fancy Sturridge".
Evans admits that his claim is just speculation, which dilutes his pronouncements somewhat, but he believes that Rodgers cancelled the Sturridge deal in an attempt to force the club's owners into a bid for Clint Dempsey.
