Current Republic of Ireland boss Martin O'Neill may be set for a sensational return to the Premier League as Stoke City continue their search for a new manager.
Mark Hughes was sacked last weekend after Stoke's FA Cup exit at League Two side Coventry. Now, the Telegraph are reporting Stoke City have reached out to O'Neill to discuss a potential move.
The FAI had announced last year that O'Neill had agreed a contract extension, however, it later emerged that the deal had not been signed. Earlier this evening bookmakers instilled Slaven Bilic as favourite for the post. Yet multiple reports have emerged in recent days that the club's hierarchy would like a British or Irish manager.
Derby boss Gary Rowett had been a name discussed in recent weeks but that will not happen now after he signed a new contract until 2021 today with the club.
It is understood Stoke have spoken to O'Neill, but have not ruled out other candidates depending on how discussions go.
Martin O'Neill has not managed in the Premier League since he was sacked by Sunderland back in 2013. Before that, he enjoyed prolonged success in the league with Aston Villa and Leicester City.
