We'll refrain from any lighthearted comments about Bosnia's play-off defeat to Ireland because we're really feeling for Senad Lulic after hearing that he has lost part of his finger in a freak gym accident.

Lulic, who was probably Bosnia's main threat in the away leg in Zenica, was hitting the gym with his club Lazio when an undisclosed accident occurred causing some fairly horrendous injuries to his right hand.

According to Eurosport, Lulic suffered a 'sub-amputation of the distal phalanx and fracture of the fourth finger, plus fracture of the intermediary phalanx of the third finger.' In layman's terms that means he lost part of his ring finger and broke his middle finger.

Lazio have confirmed that the 29 year old underwent surgery on Wednesday to reconstruct the partially amputated finger and repair the fracture to the middle finger.

Lulic posted those images on his Instagram account back in February during a comeback from another injury. Given the severity of this latest setback it is not expected that Lulic will be able to return until after the Christmas break.

While it may seem like something of interesting oddity, this incident really does highlight that there is quite a bit of care to be taken in the gym. So when you're hitting the weights in January, make sure to take whatever safety precautions are necessary.
