Borussia Dortmund have informed Bayern Munich and Robert Lewandowski that the Polish striker will not be allowed to join the European Champions this summer. Lewandowski has been widely tipped to join Bayern this summer following the footsteps of his former teammate Mario Gotze. His agent and the player himself made it known he wanted to join Bayern and former Bayern coach Jupp Heyneckes made no secret of an impending deal in the aftermath of the Champions League final between the two clubs.
Dortmund's CEO Aki Watzke is quoted in German daily Bild today as saying: "Robert Lewandowski will definitely not make the switch to FC Bayern in 2013. That's final. We have informed Robert and his agents now."
Their general manager, Michael Zorc is also quoted: "We have informed the player and his agent that we will object to a switch to FC Bayern this summer. He has always been very professional so far. He has a flawless character"
Fair dues to them for not backing down in the face of Bayern. He will now inevitably head to England have a poor year and join Bayern. But still, principles and all that.
