The joint bid between Ireland and the UK for Euro 2028 was confirmed this week, with the five associations in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales committing to the process to hold the tournament.

It was originally anticipated that bid would face no competition from other UEFA nations, although that may not be the case. Both Turkey and Russia say they will explore the possibility of hosting either Euro 2028 or Euro 2032 in the months ahead.

Of course, the likelihood of Russia being considered for any events at the moment seems incredibly unlikely. The country is under a number of sporting sanctions due to the invasion of Ukraine, with a huge number of their teams and athletes unable to compete in international competitions as a result.

Earlier today, Boris Johnson was asked about Russia's bid for Euro 2028 and whether it would actually be a better idea to host the tournament in Ukraine. Despite his government backing the bid for the event to be hosted in his own country, he said that Ukraine would be the obvious choice.

I think that the idea of Russia holding any type of football tournament or any kind of cultural event right now is beyond satire. I can't think that anybody would seriously consider their suggestion.

Yes, I think that the best thing possible would be for the entire Russian armed forces to retire forthwith from Ukraine and hand the entire tournament to them, of course.

While this was somewhat of a leading question, you can't help but the feeling that Johnson had completely forgotten about the British and Irish bid for Euro 2028.

Considering his only interest in sport seems to be to use it as a political tool, that really should not come as a surprise.
