In a boost to the world's attention span, Twitter have today announced that they are killing six-second video hosting service, Vine. Rumours that the loss of such a tightly-edited highlights platform has devalued Paul Pogba by half are, as of yet, unsubstantiated.
Twitter announced today that they would be "discontinuing" Vine, without giving a reason. They did assure users that:
Nothing is happening to the apps, website or your Vines today.
You'll be able to access and download your Vines. We'll be keeping the website online because we think it's important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made.
If the aim of Gay Talese and the rest of the great journalists of the twentieth century was to give a voice to the "unnoticed"; to tell the story of heroes in as pithy and evocative way as possible, then Vine, for a couple of glorious years, outstripped this grand ambition.
For example, without Vine, the name of Andy Tate would not echo around the world as it does today:
So, as Vine takes its leave from this mortal coil, we should take a moment to reflect and memory on some of the best sporting vines that have been furnished our way in the past.
