Distressing news for those nostalgic for mid-90s English light entertainment.

Danny Baker, the talk radio yapper who spent the bulk of the Britpop era on the razz with Paul Gascoigne and Chris Evans, found last night's result rather too much to bear.

The 2-1 defeat to Iceland overwhelmed his sanity and shortly after the final whistle he let loose with an expletive ridden orgy of abuse on twitter. He came off like an especially irate Joe Duffy caller who had forgotten to attend his latest anger management class.

Every form of moralistic and populist term critique of English footballers was deployed. The England football team were a 'disgrace to working people', he even said at one point.

We thought it would be hard to overestimate the nature of England's humiliation last night but Danny Baker has managed it. Steady on chap, you're a grown man.
