Germany and Bayern midfielder Sebastian Schweinsteiger has paid tribute to fan Nick Schuster, who was one of six Irish students who tragically lost their lives in Berkeley CA on Monday night.

Friends contacted the World Cup-winner last night with a photograph of the pair meeting for the first time, with a message describing just how much Bayern and their talismanic midfield maestro meant to their beloved Nick, who died aged just 21.

Nick was a Bayern fan. His heart is still red and white. Bastian Schweinsteiger was his favourite player. You will find below a picture of where the Nick and the Basti got to know each other.

Schweinsteiger was quick to respond with a heartfelt message to Nick's family and friends on his Facebook, sharing the photo of himself and his biggest fan with the caption:

The news makes me very sad. I wish much strength for this difficult time you, the family and all relatives of Nick.

I would like to express my condolences also all other sufferers of this accident.

It's a great effort from Nick's friends to offer some level of comfort to the young man's family. Hats off to them, and of course to Bastian for responding.
