Barcelona Sack Player Hours After Signing Him Over 'Offensive Tweets'

The reports announcing Sergi Guardiola's signing for Barcelona B (in truth, it was never going to be headline news) had to be hastily rewritten to incorporate his immediate departure from the club after his new employers were alerted to his past misdeeds on social media.

Social media sleuths dredged up a number of tweets Guardiola sent in 2013 which were deemed offensive to not only the club but Catalonia itself.

Three tweets have been cited by the Spanish press.

Two of them rather similar in sentiment. One is translated in Marca English as 'Up Real Madrid and to hell with Catalonia' and another read 'Today to hell with Catalonia and up Real Madrid'.

Perhaps most damningly of all, one tweet was critical of the blessed Lionel Messi.

I wouldn't have Messi in my team - he just walks about... he spoils the way the team plays

The club released a statement on the matter late last night.

FC Barcelona has decided to terminate the contract signed with Sergi Guardiola, after finding that he had published offensive tweets about the club and Catalonia.

Guardiola moved to protect his twitter account on Monday night, but alas it was too late to save his contract. His seven hour sojourn at the Nou Camp came to an end.
