The former RUC officer and human rights campaigner Richard Barklie is among the five Chelsea fans who have been banned from attending football matches for five years following the incident on the Paris Metro earlier this year.
Barklie had insisted he did not join in the racist chanting but district court judge Gareth Branston asserted otherwise. Along with 20 year old Josh Parsons, Barklie was pegged as a ringleader in the racist chanting and abuse. The others banned were Jordan Munday of Sidcup and William Simpson of Ashford.
Barklie was a Chelsea season ticket holder and worked with the WAVE Trauma Centre in Northern Ireland, which helped people affected by the Troubles.
Three years ago, he penned an article for the Journal.ie on his work for families bereaved in the Troubles. In a human rights conference in India a couple of years ago, he quoted such figures as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King while condemning racial intolerance.
