Video replays being used to arbitrate decisions in football was never going to be without its teething problems. In Portugal on Tuesday night, another cropped up.

Aves were already leading Boavista 2-0 in the Primeira Liga when Vitor Gomes struck a third for the home side. As it appeared Gomes was in an offside position when he scored, the goal was referred to the VAR official.

The problem: a large Boavista flag in the stand blocking the view of the camera which would have definitively shown whether or not the player was offside.

Gomes does appear to be offside when the ball is headed on from a corner. The Boavista fan can be thankful his side were already behind in the game.
