Spare a thought for the humble Premier League footballer who decided to call it a day along with Fergie at the end of the 2012-13 season. Is there any more unfortunate creature in the world?

For the average Premier League salary experienced a massive jump in 2013-14, leaping from an average of £1.6m to £2.3m per annum - or £43,000 a week. The increase has been put down to the £1bn a year TV deal that took affect at the start of the 2013-14 season.

English football is out on its own in terms of dishing out massive pay packets. The German Bundesliga, long heralded as a model of Teutonic probity, comes in a distant second, with the average yearly salary coming to £1.6m.

The English Championship comes in at No. 8 in the list. The stats come courtesy of the Daily Mail.
