Eamon Dunphy said that Ireland could have gotten Harry Kane had we 'been doing our work properly' in recruiting players from English football.
Dunphy credited Jack Charlton's zeal in seeking out English and Scottish born players of Irish extraction in the late 80s with helping to power much of Ireland's success in the golden era.
He argues that efforts in this area have dropped in recent years and the national team has suffered. Harry Kane is eligible to play for Ireland through his Galway-born father.

He is not optimistic about Ireland's prospects of victory on Sunday. The performance in Hampden Park and the injury worries about a number of players mean Dunphy is not in a positive mood about Sunday's game.

Dunphy has, er, rather extensive experience of Poland from his playing days. During his international career in the late 1960s and early 70s, Ireland played Poland with a remarkable, and somewhat suspicious, frequency. According to Dunphy, the frequency with which Ireland met the Poles was attributable to the FAI blazer's enthusiasm for cheap 'goodies'.
