Arsene Wenger has revealed that Danny Welbeck signed on a permanent deal with Arsenal only because the Frenchman was not in London on deadline day.
The Arsenal manager – who was in Rome for a charity match on deadline day – revealed that he wanted to sign Welbeck on loan with an option to buy. Speaking about the deal Wenger has said:
If I had not travelled that day, Welbeck would not be here. The coincidence made it. If I stayed in my home, Welbeck would not be here. I will tell you that story one day. That is the truth. We are in 2014, you can always be in touch.
I wonder what that story is? Anyhow, it's ironic that Arsenal fans were upset at the fact that he was in Rome that day when they were so desperately in need of signing a striker.
Wenger clarified that while he originally wanted him on a loan deal he was happy to sign Wenger permanently come the end of the day. He also made it clear that he feels the former United player's strongest position is through the middle.
I wonder if he thinks as highly of his new signing as Liam Brady does, given the Irish legend's comments yesterday.
