In what is a wonderfully bitter show of Premier League nonsense, Arsene Wenger has said he has no sympathy for Liverpool over losing Raheem Sterling because they refused to sell him Luis Suarez.
Ahead of tonight's clash between the two teams at the Emirates, the Arsenal manager was asked if he believes Liverpool may regret selling Sterling to Manchester City for £49m. Somewhat bizarrely, Wenger was having none of it.
I personally rate Raheem Sterling. We will see that in the longer term. I personally don’t think that Sterling was making a lot of drama. It’s just during the transfer window that happened.
They refused to sell us Suarez so I cannot feel too much sympathy for them.
Suarez was the subject of a £40m plus £1 bid from the Gunners in 2013, before the Uruguayan went on to score 31 goals the following season as Liverpool ultimately fell just short of the title. The 28-year-old then joined Barcelona for a reported fee of around £70m.
However, Wenger did acknowledge the difficulty of the task Brendan Rodgers faced to replace his star players.
Let’s remember two years ago with Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling they scored over a hundred goals. To score more than 100 goals in the Premier League, you need special quality to do that.
Arsenal host Liverpool at the Emirates tonight, the Gunners recovered from their opening day defeat to West Ham with a win at Crystal Palace while Liverpool managed successive 1-0 wins in their opening fixtures against Stoke and Bournemouth.
