Arsene Wenger summoned up all his years of experience to tolerate Gary Neville's 'ridiculous' comments about Arsenal players.
In his Daily Telegraph column this week, Neville hit on a theme on a persistent theme, that of self-indulgent Arsenal players forsaking the more humdrum aspects of their job.
I may be wrong, but I sense that Arsenal players go into training on Friday morning thinking about how they’ll pass the ball, score with a bicycle kick, how much fun they are going to have.
Furthermore, he alleged that Arsenal do not prepare properly for big matches and don't analyse the strengths and weaknesses of opponents in sufficient detail.
To the delight of everyone in the media, Wenger 'hit back' (as they say) with a somewhat curious and sarcastic response.
We just turn up on Saturday, just go out and play. Honestly, I am 30 years in this job. I have a good tolerance level to sometimes listen to things that are really ridiculous. Honestly. I can do it.
Indeed, two days ago at the Arsenal AGM, Wenger boasted about the forensic and meticulous nature of his current backroom team.
Wenger said that the backroom boys provide an 'unbelievable amount of detail and data. I do everything possible to make sure I make the right decision for the club - it is not off the cuff.'
Pretty much the opposite of what Neville said.
